Palestine - A symbol of injustice and double standards

An essay by M A Baig

It often baffles me the way some people tend to attach more importance to the past than the very present they are living in. Take the last world war for example; they express their utter horror over the atrocities carried out by the Nazis. They ask how on earth the most civilised society, Europe of the twentieth century, allowed itself to stoop to such a low level of human behaviour. They find it incomprehensible how one human being could do what the Nazis did to their fellow human beings. It is emphasised that the holocaust must never be forgotten. Apparently, we are told, so that it never happens again. And yet, it is happening right now right in front of us in our very own times.

Man's madness against his fellow human being has covertly and overtly carried on to the present day. From the murky jungles of Tribal Africa to the mountains of Kashmir, from Balkan Sea to the deserts of the Middle East, the genocide carries on. It never ceased to exist; we are just evolving to accept it. The crystal clear sense of human justice has also evolved a great deal and has developed many colours of righteousness. Each and every one of us adopts the shade that suits us, depending upon the colour of our skin, politics of our country, religion or simply the party of our interest. But, no matter what colour you choose to paint the picture with, all of us still know the canvass underneath.

It has been over half a century since the suffering of a people began when the suffering of many came to an end in 1945. One has to research modern history hard to find even the nearest example of the longevity of suffering which the Palestinian people have endured through generations. And who their antagonist should be? Israel, the country, which has made holocaust it's own, copyright and trade mark- in more than one way. It is unbelievable that a persecuted race, so eager to constantly remind the world of its own genocide, could inflict so much suffering & humiliation on another race. Is this just hypocrisy or has the legend of the werewolf come alive. If anyone fails to see the damning similarities between the treatment of the Jews by the Germans and the role reversal for the Israelis for their persecution of the Palestinians, than I am afraid their shade of justice is too opaque to let any rays of human reasoning passing through.

Israelis and their sympathisers in Europe, and especially in America, are obsessed with the relentless efforts of reminding the world of the holocaust and vigorously pursue in active efforts to ensure that world does not forget what happened to the Jews during the war. So intense has been this campaign that even the suggestion that the estimated total loss of Jewish life during the Great War of six million is exaggerated, immediately renders you an anti-Semite. With disciplined regularity, a best selling book, a television serial or a major Hollywood block buster goes over the subject, for new and ever expanding number of viewers and readers around the world, portraying what the Nazis did to the Jews almost making rest of the world war a side issue. The fact is that 40 million souls perished in 6 terrible years - 24 millions of them Russians alone.

And yet some 55 years on these Israelis are, in principle, engaged in the same heinous practice against Palestinian civilians including children of mere 10 years of age. Can anyone explain the difference between the occupation of Poland and France in 1940 and the illegal occupation of Israel of the land outside Israeli borders? Or indeed the difference between getting shot in the back by an SS officer and shot in the head by the brave Israeli army. The only difference is that one took place half a century ago in a very dark hour in human history - the other is happening right now live on our television screens in front of the world standing by shamelessly. Western world in particular, general public, administration and the media alike, seem to be paralysed by the Zionist propaganda.
If anyone has any doubt about this weapon of influence, check out the American political set-up where the occupants, Democrat or Republican, of the most powerful seat on planet shamelessly endorse Israeli policies, moral or immoral, to appease the all mighty all-powerful Jewish lobbies in the country. It was this kind of power in the hands of German Jews, which became a major cause of discontent amongst the militant Germans. It certainly is evident that this is the very reason of emergence of anti Jewish Nazi groups in the USA today, admittedly at a much smaller scale.
I personally have no doubt that Holocaust took place and the Jews were victims of some of the terrible atrocities at the hand of the Nazis. But I, for one, cannot differentiate between the misfortunes of Jews during the war and misfortunes of Palestinians ever since at the hands of no other than those very Jews. Israelis are ever keen to keep the lessons of the holocaust alive. My billion-dollar question to the Israelis is what have they learnt from it that they want to teach rest of the world?

I find it absolutely sickening personally, and bewildering as an observer, how accepted the Palestinian tragedy has become to the west and its media. I witness, in bitterness and disbelief, journalists reporting and questioning in a tone, which so vividly reflect that poorly disguised biased towards Israel. There is a hidden element of praise for Israeli military machine and its brutal 'efficiency'. The reports 'admired' the accuracy of Israeli missiles and yet no one mentioned an ambulance taking a direct hit. Covering the Israeli gunship attacking the civilian targets in the middle of Palestinian population, BBC's Ben Brown described it "an eye for an eye" at a time when the number of Palestinian dead stood at 95 against 5 Israelis. Perhaps an eye for an eyebrow would have been less shameful an exaggeration. Israeli army is an army of occupation and Palestinian people are an oppressed people under siege - should they be presenting flowers to the occupation forces instead of throwing stones at them? Had Hitler's Nazi forces occupied Britain, I have my doubt that the Londoners would have offered them cups of tea. Instead of asking the Israelis what are they doing in the occupied lands 33 years on, they ask Palestinian to stop the violence (throwing stones). American secretary of state Madeleine Albright's first statement was to ask Yaser Arafat to stop the violence. Those who know her origin and background were not surprised, but it still spells out the morality of American politics. The candidates for the American presidential elections, hardly America's finest hour, were trying to floor each other with supportive statements for Israel to appease the Jewish voters. This is the world we are living in. It is this kind of world, which I believe, has nothing to offer to Palestinians.
They must do what was needed to be done to drive the aggressors and oppressors out of occupied France & rest of Europe in 1940s. Forces of occupation have, from Afghanistan and Falkland Islands to Kuwait and Lebanon, suffered the humiliation that history has reserved for Israel to eventually face one day. Faced with this kind of reasoning Israelis try to seek legitimacy for their illegal occupation of lands outside Israeli borders in their interpretation of the Bible - that the ancient scriptures give them the right ot these lands. Try to sell this idea to the 75% of the worlds population and even the majority of the other 25%. Even the bikini clad 'prospectors' with heavy American accent who might regard religion an ancient nonsense are queuing up for cheap luxury settlement homes in this holiday resort on the basis of having a Jewish name. They claim this was their land 5 thousand years ago yet most of them were totally aliens to the region only few years earlier. Where have they been for the 5000 years. In this context, it would make lot more sense for the Red Indians to demand for an evacuation of North America of all other races. Aborigines would have a great deal more justification in demanding for all foreign races to get out of Australia. Israelis have a rather unique sense of what is fair and what is reasonable - could this be an explanation behind their long and consistent history of turmoil and persecution? They certainly disagree with the 90 per cent of the world population represented at the United Nations where Israel has the most unique and unenviable position of having made mockery of its resolution concerning the occupied territories and yet getting full recognition by the 'civilised' world including the sole super power which is self appointed guardian of justice and the "American way"! The international law is not Torah, Quran or Bible; it is agreed by all nations, civilised or not, at the United Nations. Its resolution 242 is crystal clear on Israeli occupation.

I hope I am wrong in believing that there is no such thing as a negotiated settlement with Israel for Palestinians, but my personal observation of this issue for the past quarter of a century reinforces my belief every year that passes by. In my opinion there is only one solution to this problem - Get justice rather than beg for it. And God knows Palestinians have agitated, negotiated, asked and begged for 33 years. If any one still expects them to wait and hope, they are far removed from the value of justice or they are being plain dishonest. Just look at the Palestinian desperation - young men in their teens, armed with two handfuls of stones, are taking on armour, helicopter gunships and pointed barrels of M16 automatic rifles. This is suicidal but they know no nation in history has been presented with their freedom on a platter. If anybody has any doubt about this philosophy, every chapter in history will testify it. Even this very chapter has an obvious example in the shape Hizbullah - a rag tag band of martyrs (terrorist to Israelis and their sympathisers) who inflicted the humiliating defeat on the so-called mighty Israeli Army and drove it out after a decade of occupation. And those who insist that Palestinian give up throwing stones and put their trust in 'peace process' alone are trying to suppress human spirit's natural strife for freedom. And who can deny the fact that it was the very act of Intifada along with Hammas and Hizbullah's guerrilla war, which forced Israel to reconsider its position and opt for the 'peace process'.

If Israelis reject their moderate countrymen and go back to their oppressive ways then I have no doubt that Israelis are digging their own graves in the bottomless graveyard of history where the mightiest of the empires and most fearsome of the Reiches perished in their belief that they were invincible. In 1940, they were helpless people at the mercy of the Nazis; today they are far too intoxicated in the arrogance of their military power that they are making a pretty lousy effort to secure a peaceful future for their children in 2040. I believe their foolishness lies in ignoring the history. Israelis surely cannot go on persecuting Palestinians without paying a terrible price at the end of it. As for their American backing, Soviet Union was no less powerful a superpower than America - only a mere few years ago. Israel cannot exist without America. What guarantee the Israelis have of America remaining the supreme power forever? And at that, what guarantee indeed is there that America will back their unjust policies forever. I suppose the odds are no better or worse than for Arabs to remain forever the down trodden a nation and impotent a force that they currently are. I am afraid; Israel has opted for a law much older than their own scriptures - that who ever wields the biggest stick owns the herd. My fear for the Jewish state is that one day, as happens so often in history, the other side might one day come up with a stick bigger than Israel's. Would they not then want to play the game with an Israeli set of rules?

The Jewish influence over the world media has resulted in earning sympathies for Israel from the people of Europe and America despite country's appalling human rights record and despite having shown more contempt for the United Nation than any other member state. They have been able to strengthen these sympathies through many other factors. Firstly, hopeless and self-centred leadership throughout the Arab world, an endless list of incompetent demagogues, has not helped the Palestinian cause. Secondly, Israel's case has further benefited from the fact that there is a general dislike in the west of the Arab controlling most of the worlds oil reserves, especially since the 1973 Arab Israeli war and the subsequent Arab oil embargo. Thirdly, with a large number of white European and American Jews moving to the Jewish state, Israel is perceived as a representative of western culture in the Arab Middle East. United Nation is the body of international community. Israel has made mockery of its resolutions for 30 years with the help of the Americans. The occupied lands outside Israeli borders remain illegally occupied. International law prevents any settlement in occupied territories. Yet Israel has not only done just that they have now annexed the land because they say that the bible approves of it! The Americans who bombed Iraq back to dark ages under a United Nation Resolution and claimed they did not get Saddam Hussain (CIA wisely advised against removing Saddam as this would have resulted an almost certain alliance between Shiite Iraq and Shiite Iran) because the United Nation Resolution did not mandated it. Well how many resolutions the international community has stacked against Israel, with a democratic majority of the world behind them, which have been victims of Israeli contempt for the past 30 years? All with the compliment of United States - a country which proclaims to be the champion of democracy and freedom. This, I am afraid is the true nature of the world we are living in.
