Birth of the Dhul'Hujjah moon is going to take place on 10th January at precisely 12:03 and 49 seconds GMT . This is only a few hours before the sunset and obviously means that the crescent moon will not be able to be sighted anywhere in the Islamic world. In fact it will not be possible to be sighted anywhere in the world except in Chile, where a minor chance of its sighting exists. This is becuase, by the time evening reaches that part of the world, the moon's age would have reached 15 hours. However, on the following day, 11th of January, the crescent would have been well formed overnight and will be easily sighted throughout the world. This would give us Hujj (Yum-al-Arrafah) on Thursday 20th January and Eid-ul-Adha on Friday 21st - worldwide.
Please Note:
The current known Saudi formula for the start of Islamic month is "Sunset before moonset at Makkah". Since the Sunset at Makkah for 10th January is 5.56pm and moonset is 5.53pm, this should mean that even the Saudis would start the month on 11th and therefore, a world wide division will be prevented - one hopes!
